About The Char Dham

The Chardham Yatra is one of the most popular Hindu pilgrimages in India. It is a tour of four holy sites in Uttarakhand - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri - nestled high up in the Himalayas.

When and how these holy shrines got linked in a pilgrimage circuit is not known, but it is believed that each of these shrines have a particular legend behind them. The Chardham shrines are open for around six months every year, starting in April or May and closing with the onset of winter in October or November.

About Yamunotri

Located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, the sacred shrine of Yamunotri is situated on an astonishing height of 3,100 meters. Thousands of devotees visit this holy shrine to take a bath in the heavenly waters of the divine Yamuna river. It is said that the waters cleanse all sins and protect you from untimely death.

About Gangotri

Among the four holy shrines of Chota Char Dham, the second most sacred is the town of Gangotri. It is believed that the sacred river Bhagirathi takes birth here before merging with Alaknanda in Devprayag to form Ganga, India’s most famous river.

About Kedarnath

The renowned shrine of Kedarnath, also called Kedari dhaam or 'Kedar' is the third in the series of the holy abodes of Chota Char Dham. It is also regarded as one of the most powerful shrines in the region, where it is believed that taking a dip in its water can wash away all your sins.

Badrinath Dham

The pristine beauty of the place, the snow clad peaks and the holy Alaknanda River have made it a must visit destination for all those seeking peace and devotion. The pious Badrinath Dham draws pilgrims with unwavering faith to the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand every year.

Badrinath is a pious site for Hindus and Jains alike as it is one of the holiest Divya Desams (108 divya devas) in the country. Moreover, it is considered to be one of the most important shrines for the Vaishnavites.

The present structure of the temple has gone through plenty of restorations as a result of the ravages of earthquakes and avalanches. The shrine is a must visit for the devotees during the Chota Char Dham Yatra.

Usually, the doors of the temple remain shut during winters as a precautionary measure to keep away the sleet and snow from entering the sanctum. But, there is a tradition that starts in April, when the doors are opened and the priests light a lamp in front of the deity during these months. This is said to signify that Narad Muni who obtained salvation in this temple, continues with his ritual worship even during the winters.
