Know about Kushinagar City:

The present Kushinagar is identified with Kushavati (in the pre-Buddha period) and Kusinara (in the post-Buddha period). Kusinara was the capital of Mallas which was one of the sixteen mahajanapadas of the 6th Century BCE. Since then, it remained an integral part of the erstwhile empires of Maurya, Shunga, Kushana, Gupta, Harsha, and Pala dynasties. In the mediaeval period, Kushinagar had passed under the suzerainty of Kultury Kings. Kushinara continued to be a living city till the 12th century CE and was thereafter lost into oblivion. Padrauna is believed to be ruled over by a Rajput adventurer, Madan Singh, in the 15th century CE. However, modern Kushinagar came into prominence in the 19th century with archeological excavations carried out by Alexander Cunningham, the first Archeological Survey of India and later followed by C.L. Carlleyle who exposed the main stupa and also discovered a 6.10 metres long statue of reclining Buddha in 1876. Excavations continued in the early twentieth century under J. Ph. Vogel. He conducted archaeological campaigns in 1904-5, 1905-6 and 1906-7, uncovering a wealth of Buddhist materials.

• RAMABHAR STUPA

  Ramabhar Stupa was built over a portion of the Buddha’s ashes on the spot where he was cremated by the ancient Malla people.

• USMANPUR

  In Usmanpur,First of all, in 1996, the excavation work was started at Veer Bhari Tila which is located in Usmanpur. During that excavation many evidences like utensils, foundations of old buildings, old bricks, ancient clay idols etc. were found. All this evidence was taken by the Archaeological Department. Again in 2001, the land of Veer Bhari Tila was demarcated by barbed wire and after that water work was done again in 2016, the mounds were beautified which is still available as evidence.

• Badurao

  Tila is situated near Badhiwa Pokhara in Baduraon Hola Vantail. Which was earlier told by elders that it was Amarvan. The hillock is situated in this forest. Lord Buddha rested there. And preached to his disciples. At that time the name of Badurao was known as Bhognagar. And his worshipers used to worship him by making his idols. After some time the name of Bhognagar came to be known as 4 Vodh Gram. After that, the present name Badurao has been given at this time.

• Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple

  This temple is a joint-venture between the AIK World Buddhist Culture Association Japan and the Sri Lanka Buddhist Centre. A flight of stairs leads to the main shrine made up of a domed brick structure on the first floor. The shrine contains an image of Buddha surrounded by ritualistic objects.

• Chinese Buddhist Temple

  Linh-Son Vietnam Chinese Buddhist Temple is located further north of the Burmese Temple. The main shrine is a two-storied building built in Chinese style complete with images of dragons and laughing Buddha. The Chinese temple complex also features replicas of shrines at the four important Buddhist pilgrimage sites: Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar. In addition to these, there is a replica of a Buddhist temple in Vietnam. This temple also has lotus ponds.
