It's a once in a lifetime pilgrimage that millions undertake every year and many aspire to experience it. The journey itself is a spiritual quest that cleanses pilgrims of their past sins and helps them free themselves from the cycle of reincarnation.

One of the four Teendhams (Kedarnath, Puri, Rameswaram and Dwarka) of India and also a pillar of the Chota Teen Dham of Uttarakhand, Badrinath is regarded as the holiest shrine in the world. During the summer months it is a hive of activity with a plethora of devotees visiting here to pay homage to Lord Vishnu.

Teen Dham Yatra

Badrinath Dham

  • The pristine beauty of the place, the snow clad peaks and the holy Alaknanda River have made it a must visit destination for all those seeking peace and devotion. The pious Badrinath Dham draws pilgrims with unwavering faith to the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand every year.
  • Badrinath is a pious site for Hindus and Jains alike as it is one of the holiest Divya Desams (108 divya devas) in the country. Moreover, it is considered to be one of the most important shrines for the Vaishnavites.
  • The present structure of the temple has gone through plenty of restorations as a result of the ravages of earthquakes and avalanches. The shrine is a must visit for the devotees during the Chota Teen Dham Yatra.
  • Usually, the doors of the temple remain shut during winters as a precautionary measure to keep away the sleet and snow from entering the sanctum. But, there is a tradition that starts in April, when the doors are opened and the priests light a lamp in front of the deity during these months. This is said to signify that Narad Muni who obtained salvation in this temple, continues with his ritual worship even during the winters.

Weather

  • The most prominent pilgrimage site of India, Badrinath is a major part of the Teen Dham Yatra and a popular destination for tourists. Situated at an elevation of 3,300 meters above sea level, Badrinath is renowned for its scenic beauty and enigmatic charm.
  • During the summer season, it is a great time to visit Badrinath as the weather is pleasant and comfortable. The temperature remains around 18 degC - ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
  • June is considered the best month to visit Badrinath and offers pleasant climate with temperatures ranging between 15 degree Celsius to 25 degrees Celcius. While the temperature can drop a little in the evening, it is not too cold.
  • December is the winter season in Badrinath and the region experiences heavy snowfall with temperatures dipping to sub-zero levels. During this period, the road to Badrinath is closed and the temple remains closed for darshan.
  • As the name suggests, the best time to visit Badrinath is during summers when it is crowded with tourists. This season is also a good time to explore the surrounding areas of the temple and other attractions.

Jagannath Puri Dham

  • One of the four pilgrimage destinations of India, Puri is famous for its temple devoted to Lord Jagannath. The place is a cultural hub of Orissa and is a must visit for tourists from all over the world.
  • Besides the main temple, there are several other shrines to visit and a lot of other interesting things to do here. The best part about this place is that there are no charges to enter the temple.
  • There are a number of festivals that are celebrated with great fervor here. The most awaited one is the Rath Yatra, which draws huge crowds to this place every year.
  • Apart from this, the Jagannath temple also has a number of fascinating mysteries that are worth watching. The first mystery is that the temple has no shadow from any direction at all and it is believed to be a message from Lord Jagannath.
  • The second mystery is that the Prasad cooked here in the temple is prepared in a special way using seven bit pots. The food in the top most pot is cooked first and the rest follow the same order.
  • It is a miracle that the same quantity of Prasad is always cooked and offered to devotees everyday. During the weekend or any other time of the day, the number of devotees may differ but still there is no waste as this quantity remains the same.
  • Another mystery is that the chariot which is used in the Rath Yatra is a mammoth size chariot and countless devotees put their lives on stake to pull this chariot. This is done as a form of worship to Lord Jagannath along with Balbhadra and Subhadra.

Weather

  • April is the hottest month in Puri with average maximum day time temperature reaching 33degC (91degF) with very high heat & humidity. It gets very warm at night as well.
  • The chance of rain/snow in Puri is 3% on an average day. Wet days are those with at least 0.04 inches of liquid or liquid-equivalent precipitation.

Dwarika Dham

  • According to Hindu mythology, Dwarka was once the capital of Lord Krishna. It was built on the banks of the Gomti River in Gujarat state, India.
  • The story of Dwarka is a fascinating one. It is said that the ocean, in the form of a deity, submerged Dwarka. This event happened during the Kali age, when Lord Krishna had to leave this world to enter the spiritual world after 125 years.
  • Hence, it is considered one of the Seven Moksha Puri and is also an important Vaishnava pilgrimage site. The Dwarkadhish temple is a grand monument that is dedicated to the Lord.
  • It is a five-storey temple on 60 stone pillars. It has two entrances, 'Moksha Dwar' and 'Swarg Dwar'.
  • The Dwarkadhish Temple or Jagat Mandir is an ancient temple that dates back to 2000 to 2200 years. It is also the place where Krishna's wife Rukmini is believed to be worshiped.

  • This temple is surrounded by a complex of other religious sites. These include the Rukmani temple, Gopi Talav and Beyt Dwarka temple.
  • The temple is encircled by a huge spire with the flag of the temple hanging on it, a triangular flag with the image of Sun and Moon. The flag is hoisted thrice a day and is replaced by a new one each time it is taken down.

Weather

  • The climate of Dwarka is warm and pleasant all the year round. The weather is characterized by hot and humid summers from March to June and a mild monsoon till September.
  • The peak season is around August and September when Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with great fervor. This is the best time to visit Dwarika as a pilgrimage.

Rameshwaram Dham

  • Located on Pamban Island, the holy pilgrimage town of Rameshwaram is considered one of the most sacred Teen Dhams in India. It is a popular pilgrimage destination for both Shiva devotees and Vaishnavites.
  • As per Hindu epic Ramayana, Lord Rama arrived here to search for his wife Sita and built Rama Setu - a bridge to reach Lanka (now Sri Lanka) so that he could fight the demon king Ravana. He prayed to Shiva to remove any sins he committed in fighting Ravana.
  • He also recited the Shiva mantra and installed a Shiva Lingam here. This Shiva lingam was brought by Hanuman from Mount Kailash, a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • A replica of Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, this lingam is worshipped first and then by devotees. It is said that if you cannot visit Varanasi to perform a dip in the Ganga, then visiting Rameshwaram is incomplete.

Weather

  • The holy city of Rameswaram is a famous tourist destination in India. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples and a pilgrimage site for Shaivites, Vaishnavites, and Smarthas.
  • The city experiences a tropical climate and is a popular destination all year round. However, the best time to visit is from October to April.
